THE FUTURE IS NOW FOR MARVIN RIDGE MAVERICKS SOCCER TEAM
“The future is now, we have to play consistently and keep improving as a team.” Those are the words of veteran soccer coach Roy Fuma, the head coach of Marvin Ridge High School. With a brand new school, this edition of the Mavericks Men’s Soccer team has a unique opportunity to set a winning tradition in place. In an area as rich in soccer talent as South Charlotte, the Mavericks have a stable of talented players to build with.
Defender Jordan Day and Sweeper Chris Becker are two of the leaders for Coach Fuma.
“It’s nice to be here with a lot of familiar players,” said Jordan. “A lot of us have played club and school soccer together for many years. We have a real good coach and I believe we have a very good team.”
Chris agrees with Jordan. “We want to make it to the state tournament. We are putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the big guy on the block.”
Both players feel the lack of a senior class is an advantage versus a disadvantage. It has allowed them to both step up and serve as leaders of the team.”
Coach Fuma has coached in Union County for 25 years and established the reputation as a very successful soccer coach. He is very excited about the new opportunity at Marvin Ridge.
“I want to build a program with quality players that play good soccer. We are very talented, just a little light on experience with no seniors. We are asking players that have never played varsity soccer to compete against teams with 2-3 years of experience playing together.”
Even with those challenges, Coach Fuma is looking forward to building a program all Mavericks can be proud of. With the amount of talent in this area, it’s only a matter of time before Marvin Ridge is contending for a conference and state title!
