BRIDGET WALSH FEELS AT HOME IN THE POOL AND ON LACROSSE FIELD
By Mike Walsh, South Charlotte Sports Report
Being a successful two sport athlete can prove to be a difficult job, but some people are able to accomplish this task with relative ease. Bridget Walsh is one of these athletes. Bridget is sixteen years old and a rising junior at Charlotte Catholic High School. She is the daughter of Jim and Patty Walsh. This young athlete plays lacrosse for Catholic and is also a part of their highly successful swim team.
Women’s lacrosse is a growing trend in the Charlotte area and many high schools have adopted lacrosse as both a men’s and women’s varsity sport. Bridget has been playing lacrosse since she was in eighth grade at Holy Trinity Catholic Middle School. Bridget says that her favorite part of the game has to be the team work needed in order to succeed. It takes a lot of dedication for these girls to excel in what used to be a sport reserved for men. Bridget has exhibited this dedication for the past three years, playing both for her school and participating in summer camps.
This was the first year that women’s lacrosse was a varsity sport at Charlotte Catholic. Interest in the game started to build a few years ago and a group of female students decided to form a women’s lacrosse club. Now that it is a varsity sport, the ladies can compete for state titles, and this past year the Catholic team made it to the second round of the playoffs.
Bridget has also been swimming since age five, competing for summer club leagues. Now Bridget swims for Charlotte Catholic and the Piper Glen Piranhas. Her favorite stroke is the backstroke, but she also competes in breaststroke. The Charlotte Catholic Cougars have been very successful in the past few years. The women’s team is the reigning state champs for six years running. Bridget believes that learning to swim at a young age definitely helped her to develop her affinity for the water.
Being able to manage two sports and school work will always take talent, and obviously Bridget Walsh is one of these talented individuals. The South Charlotte Sport Report wishes Bridget the best of luck in her upcoming seasons.
