Ardrey Kell High School senior baseball player Zach Weston is one of the top baseball players in the community. The son of John and Carla Weston will attend UNC Charlotte following his graduation from high school this spring. Zach is a middle infielder and will begin his first season with the Knights this spring after attending South Mecklenburg High School for the first three years of high school. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Zach.

Do you have a favorite jersey number and why?

“I wear #9 since it was the number of the great Boston Red Sox, left-handed hitter, Ted Williams.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?

“Winning the Silver Slugger Award when I played at South Charlotte Middle. When my travel ball team, Team Carolina, won “Team of the Year” at the Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Banquet and serving as a three year Varsity starter at South Meck.”

What is your favorite athletic memory?

“I have a couple favorite memories, my first homerun at Bradford Park when I was 10 and also my first high school grand slam home run.”

How did you end up choosing UNC Charlotte for college?

“I like the campus layout, the baseball and University facilities, atmosphere and the coaches were very upfront and open. After meeting Coach Doty and spending time with Coach Hibbs and Coach Robinson, I knew that Charlotte was the place for me. I look forward to playing for this coaching staff. I plan on pursuing my education in either Accounting or Criminal Justice and the University has great programs in both fields.”

Talk about the role that Team Carolina (TC) has played in your baseball development.

“I have been with Team Carolina and Coach Maddox for going on 10 years now. His training, teaching, about baseball and life in general has played a big role in molding me into the player and young man I am today. Every day, it seems Coach has a life lesson or experience, either funny or serious, nothing to do with baseball, to share with us. I owe a lot to him and the other TC coaches. At the TC facility, I have been very fortunate to work with, be trained by and build strong relationships with former pro players, like JJ Davis and Dallas Tarleton. Braxton Lane has been such a huge help and influence. I appreciate everything he has taught me. One of my favorites has always been Coach Jeff Jerman. He is always in a good mood and such a fun person to be around. They all make coming to the facility feel like a reward, but when Coach Maddox says it’s time to put in the work, we put in the work. The TC facility is the best and I am very lucky to have been a part of it for all these years.”

What are your goals for this upcoming season?

“My goal for my Senior season is to just have fun and enjoy it with my teammates. I am excited that I get to spend my Senior season with TC teammates, Jakob Cohn, Garrett Sullivan, Reid Ziomek, Luke Carpenter and Dennis Matias. This team is loaded with talent and it’s been a fun experience so far. Ardrey Kell baseball has a strong tradition and I can’t wait to get the season started to compete against any team we play. Hopefully, we can make a run in the playoffs, when they come.”

How well do you perform in the classroom?

“I am an A/B student with a 3.6 gpa. I was a part of a club last year called Operation Smile, a nonprofit medical service organization providing cleft lip and palate repair surgeries to children worldwide.”
