HIGH CHARACTER ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND WILL REMAIN UNDEFEATEDgood-character-7494

I am always saddened to watch all the praise that is tossed on professional, college and prep athletes that have low character.   These individuals are made out to be special because of their athletic talents with no concern as to what type of personal character they are composed with. The examples are endless and come right at us on a daily basis in headlines such as these:

PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

COLLEGE FOOTBALL STANDOUT ARRESTED FOR THE FOURTH TIME

HIGH SCHOOL STAR CHARGED WITH FELONY

Usually these headlines follow numerous stories about how great the player is at his sport, how many touchdowns he has scored or that a Top 20 college football team that has offered a scholarship.   I commend these kids for having a special athletic talent, but the lesson to learn here is how it also requires high character and the ability and desire to make correct decisions in life to truly find success.  Academic success and a quality education is of extreme value for those hoping to stay on a path to the top in life.   Athletic success can come to a screeching halt with one wrong  turn of the knee, or a pop inside the wrong muscle.   High character and a strong education can never be taken away from you as long as you stay true to yourself.

I read a story in one local paper recently that was full of praise for a student that had a well-documented arrest record to go along with his athletic record.  Pretty amazing in my eyes when there are so many thousands of STUDENT-athletes that go about their lives in a positive fashion.   I am very proud of my mission here at the South Charlotte Sports Report of telling our readers the stories of STUDENT-athletes that work hard inside and outside of the class in all sports.

Yes, “good kids” can fall of the tracks and lose the character we have instilled in them.  We as parents, coaches and mentors, must do all we can to educate, guide and support them along the path to adulthood.   Make it a practice to preach high character over high batting average, high grades over points per game and good decisions over tackles and sacks.  It’s also very important to follow the ABC (Avoid Bad Company) message that I deliver regularly in the South Charlotte Sports Report.

I am often asked why I take the time to speak to youth groups and publish columns and operate the South Charlotte Sports Report.  It’s real easy for me to answer; I want to see all kids do well, I want to see kids do their best in the classroom and I want to see kids stay trouble free and have a chance at a great future.  With the construction of high character in our children, we can give these kids the best chance possible to become a success in life.

Yes, it’s true, high character always has been and will remain undefeated.
